If you can't file your federal tax return by the April 18, 2023 deadline, you can request an extension. An extension gives you until October 16 to file your return. To get an extension, you must estimate your tax liability on Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. You can file by mail or online.
